Barbara Stoltzfus Schmucker

Barbara Stoltzfus was born into an Amish family on June 29, 1751 in Zweibruken, Germany. She was the daughter of Nicholas Stoltzfus who had converted to Amish at a young age after his father and mother died.

At the age of sixteen, Barbara arrived in Philadelphia with her father and brother Christian on October 18, 1766 on the ship Polly. They settled in Reading, Pennsylvania and purchased farms.

Barbara married John Schmucker, who was an Amish native of Switzerland born on September 24, 1740. He arrived in Philadelphia on May 8, 1752. Barbara and John had thirteen children. They lived on a farm West of Reading, Pennsylvania, which today is known as the 'stone house' in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. This farm was originally owned by Nicholas and Christian and was passed on to John and his wife Barbara.

John Schmucker died in 1809. Barbara died in 1838. Barbara was buried in the Myers Cemetery, where there is also a gravestone for John.
